Q3: Michael Porter uses the famous Porter’s 5 Forces to allow managers to assess the company’s competitive environment. Your supervisor believes that the competition is more likely to be related to the strategic group that the company belongs to. He says “don’t worry about the other companies. Just focus on the competition. Don’t waste time focusing on unrelated stuff. Time is of the essence. Focus on the important competitors.” Sate an argument that shows that your supervisor is NOT correct. Give at least one example for your argument.
Q4: Assume you were just hired to oversee the Procurement Department and must make all the procurement decisions. The company currently makes product A that is used as a raw material to produce one of your products. The Vice President of Operations steps into your office and asks you to outsource product A. “We can buy this product cheaper from the outside than making it here at home” he says. “Think about this for a while and let me know what you think during Monday’s meeting”. Use the “Outsourcing Matrix” provided in the course lecture to decide what your response would be on Monday. State your response.
