Theis paper are to be approximately four pages long each (double
spaced). This papers will be written on topics which include diversity
and
historical issues related to jazz including major figures and stylistic
developments. You must consult at least three outside sources . You must
use appropriate citations and itemize all outside sources used in
“Sources Cited” and “Sources Consulted” pages added to your paper.
Context is key. Consider the following as they relate to your assignment:
1) : Establish the time period when this artist was most influential and
active. What style of music were they known for and how does it relate
to the prevailing styles of the time?
2) : Speak to the artists’ contemporaries as well as the influential
artists that preceded them. This requires peripheral study and
discovery. How was what they contributed progressive and/or influential?
3) Who did they play/work with? – who were their associates?
4) Childhood may or may not be relevant. Growing up in a musical home
usually is formative. Growing up in abusive or neglected surroundings
may be formative. Avoid ancillary information that has no bearing on
their musical contributions. Birth dates are irrelevant. Deceased dates
are sometimes relevant. This is not a ‘standard’ biography. It is about
establishing their position in the historical timeline and milieu.
5) : What vicissitudes did they endure? Racism, health, drugs,propensities and social skills
etc.
6) How did they influence subsequent artists? Name some who attest to their inspiration.
7) How does the study of this artist advise your perspective of your upcoming professional life?
