Three part: US Supreme Court, Advertisement Analysis, International Relations

PART ONE:

Does the power of judicial review help or hinder democracy?

Explain what the power of judicial review is, and how it came about. Why is the Supreme Court, or why is it not, democratic? Think about the role of the court as envisioned by the founders and the constitution in formulating your essay.

Two full pages should suffice. Please properly cite resources and keep direct quotations to a minimum: use your own words and cite where ideas or arguments come from. The textbook is, of course, a useful and thorough resource.

Here are two videos that can help:

  3. PART TWO:
  1. For this writing assignment, you will analyze a broadcast advertisement by a current or former candidate for elective office. You are not limited to ads by presidential candidates. Ads are available on living room candidate.org, (Links to an external site.)YouTube (Links to an external site.), democrats.org (Links to an external site.), gop.com (Links to an external site.), and on a variety of PAC websites. You are to write an analysis using the criteria outlined below.
  2. Content Requirements

Your analysis must include the following elements:

    1. Begin your essay with a link to your campaign ad so students can watch the ad as well.
    2. Provide political background for the ad. Briefly describe or explain the following:
      • In which election year and in which race was the ad presented?
      • Who were the contestants?
      • What were the key campaign issues?
      • What interest/issue/demographic groups provided the strongest support for each candidate?
    3. Describe the content of the ad.
      • What images/symbols are used?
      • Does the candidate appear in the ad?
      • Does the opponent appear in the ad?
    4. Identify the message.
      • What is the ad trying to say?
    5. Identify the goal/strategy of the ad.
      • Who is the intended audience? (women, older Americans, racial/ethnic minorities, Republicans/Democrats)
      • What techniques are used to generate emotion (appeal to patriotism, loyalty, reason)?
      • Is the ad positive or negative in tone?
    6. Evaluate the ad’s effectiveness.
      • Has anything been said about the ad in newspapers, blogs, or elsewhere?
      • What is your opinion of the ad?
      • Does the ad achieve its goal?

    Essay Formatting Requirements

    • Essay Length: Your paper should be 3 – 5 double-spaced paragraphs with size 11-12 font, one inch margins, and saved to a Microsoft Word document.
    • Sources: Great essay will use 2-3 sources, which might include other analyses of your specific ad or political ads in general. Newspapers often provide detailed commentary about campaign ads. It is fine for you to rely entirely on the video and textbook as your resources for the essay. However, you can search for other references that lend weight to your analysis. You may go to NOVA Library website (Links to an external site.)to search for other references.
    • Citations*: Please remember to cite your sources including where you found the them. MLA citation style is preferred. Whichever style you choose (MLA (Links to an external site.), APA (Links to an external site.), etc.), please be consistent. You should include a bibliography or works cited page at the end of your essay.
    • PART THREE:
    • Write a short essay on the difference between realism and idealism, isolationism and internationalism, unilateralism and multilateralism, preemption and provocation, and hard power and soft power. In doing so, consider the issue of nuclear proliferation or violent extremism. How would the above mentioned theories or policy models apply to either of these issues? How are these theories or policy models used by various international actors (nations, leaders, or international organizations). When discussing the above issues, how could the world benefit from different applications of these theories by the US or other actors? Explain.
