This paper is a critical review of theories in modern sex therapy, and is a requirement for a post-grad certification in sex therapy. Instructions as given to me: “Choose 2 of the following books: 1. New Directions in Sex Therapy, Peggy Kleinplatz (2009) 2. A Clinician’s Guide to Systemic Sex Therapy, by Hertlein, Weeks & Gambescia (2015) 3. Quickies: The Handbook of Brief Sex Therapy Review both books in 10-12 pages. (double-spaced, 12 font) Use Microsoft Word format. If you don’t have Word you can save a Pages document in Word format, or you can create a google doc and download it in Word format. Include summaries of the chapters (2-3 sentences apiece), include some reactions to the material in them, Include reactions to the entire book as a whole for each. The instructor must be able to tell that you read the entire book as well as what you think of it. Reviews that do not reflect an understanding of the book’s material or are too vague will not be accepted.” It is not explicitly stated, but if you would like to analyze the material as for practical application, and pull in existing concepts from other counseling theories, or cite additional materials from either Ester Perel or any Gottman material (either to support or contrast), that would be great also. Also, if any of the material you read seems to be less applicable for non-monogamy, LGBTQIA+, differently abled, or neuro-diverse people, please feel free to speak up about that. The organization that I’m getting this certification through is very liberal/progressive/inclusive and they would be thrilled to have those insights brought up.
