Candidates will create a complete lesson plan based on a single piece of literature. You will submit both a Word Document (3 pages) and a PowerPoint.

The Lesson Plan will include the following:

A description of the piece of literature and a description of its usefulness in the classroom

Step 1) For this part of the assignment, please select one book that you feel passionate about. Please make it age appropriate for the grade level you will be targeting.

Grade level: 3rd & if you give a mouse a cookie

Step 2) Write a one paragraph summary of the book.

Step 3) Briefly explain why this book is appropriate for teaching the Standard. You will choose a grade level and then choose a Common Core ELA (English Language Arts & Literacy) Standard. For example, if it is Harry Potter, you might specify characterization or plot line. If it is Hungry Caterpillar, you might focus on retelling key ideas and details.

Pick one (ONLY ONE) CCSS (Common Core State Standards) identified to be taught in the lesson
Step 4) List your standard. For example, a Reading Standard for Literature for Grade 1 is “Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.” Since this is a Common Core State Standard for Reading in the area of Literature for Grade 1 and it is the 3rd standard in this area, it would be listed as CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.3 (see page 11 of the Standards pdf document).

Identify the Learning Objective for the Standard
Step 5) Within standards, there are often multiple parts, what component of the standard will you focus on? Write a learning objective aligned with this standard describing how you will teach this standard and what the students will be able to do after the lesson. For example, an objective aligned to the standard above might be: “The students will be able to identify all the characters, the setting, and three major events in the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar orally and in writing using a graphic organizer.”

Select the Vocabulary
Step 6) Go through the piece of literature and select a very small list of crucial, high use academic vocabulary (5 words max) that students must master to understand the story and/or standard. Example: For Hungry Caterpillar, it could be words like Caterpillar and Butterfly. For Harry Potter, it could be words like characterization.

Step 7) Describe your strategy for teaching the list of identified vocabulary. Also, describe sentence frames that you could use for teaching each word.

One Into/Through/Beyond and SDAIE Strategy Lesson Sequence to support student comprehension of the literature. For this section you will discuss what you will do before reading the book, while you are reading the book, and after you are finished reading the book. Each activity should be directly linked to your CCSS and objective.

Step 8) Write one paragraph describing what you will be doing for the INTO.

Step 9) Write one paragraph describing what you will be doing for the THROUGH.

Step 10) Write one paragraph describing what you will be doing for the BEYOND.

Step 11) Write at least one paragraph explaining how you will differentiate and/or modify this assignment for English language learners and/or struggling readers (please include 2-3 strategies). At least one of the differentiation strategies should be a SDAIE Strategy to support student comprehension of the literature.

Select/Make One Authentic Assessment to assess student mastery of the targeted CCSS. This assessment can formal or informal, but you should discuss student learning and how you will know that students have successfully met the goals of the CCSS and objective.

Step 12) Answer the following questions: How will you assess student mastery of the standard? What assessment will you be using? How will this assessment measure student mastery of the standard?

Step 13) Describe how you will incorporate writing instruction into your lesson. Discuss how the writing component will support the learning of the CCSS standard. The writing component can be a “Beyond” or after reading activity. It can also be how you assess student learning.
