- Remember your thesis statement is your opening paragraph and must have the five required elements and be formatted properly for me to accept it.
The essay question:
*On page 70 of your textbook, Jonathan Riley-Smith states that “the traumatic experience of the crusaders on the second wave were crucial to the development of the belief that their enterprise really was divine.” What were these ‘traumatic’ experiences, why did they happen, and how did they convince the crusaders that what they were doing was by the will and under the control of god?
a. So you have three questions here that are related to each other.
b. Where do you find the answers to these questions? Or what are the sources you will need to answer these questions?
All you should need here is Chapter Three of your textbook
THE THESIS STATEMENT:
HERE’S WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE THESIS STATEMENT
You will need to set the scene by:
Introducing the Crusades and briefly explaining what Riley-Smith means by the ‘Second Wave:” i.e this is the second wave of crusaders who embarked on the First Crusade. You also need to make clear that the second wave was composed of the main body of professional knights and lords who had prepared for Crusade as best they could. Also, you need to make clear that the First Crusade was preached as being god’s will. This assignment is about the influence of the supposed supernatural (divine) on the psyches of the crusaders.
Then you should describe the hardships/traumatic experiences these crusaders endured: i.e. the heat, hunger, and thirst, but especially the horrible conditions at the siege of Antioch.
You need to use the quote I provided above with a citation – the citation should look like this: after the quote put (Riley-Smith, 2014, 70) – then you need to cite your textbook in a bibliography or works cited section after the thesis statement: this is the proper way to cite your textbook in the bibliography: Riley-Smith, Jonathan. The Crusades, a History. 3rd edition. London and New York: Bloomsbury Academic, 2014.
Then you need to restate the essay questions: i.e. something like asking what Riley-Smith means by saying this etc.
You need to answer the essay question by briefly explaining the supernatural events that occurred during the siege of Antioch and how this was viewed as divine intervention.
Then you need to ask how these experiences convinced the crusaders that they had god’s favor and were doing his will and then answer that question. Be clear as to how these ‘signs’ of god’s support gave the crusaders the inspiration to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat at Antioch and to go on to conquer Jerusalem.
Then you need to include required element #5 (i.e. you need to briefly summarize how you will organize your paper), having already incorporated the other 4 required elements in the Thesis Statement.
THE OUTLINE
The outline should be fully focused on the topic and on your thesis
Every paragraph of your outline must provide support for your thesis
In the outline you should make your arguments for each section clear and specific
You need subheadings in your outline to show how you will provide evidence for your arguments
You need to make clear how everything you are saying ties in to the essay questions and/or your answers to them.
WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE OUTLINE:
- After the thesis statement/opening paragraph, you should have a section on how war was justified
You need a section on the preaching of the First Crusade and what was promised to the crusaders.
You need a clear section on what the first wave was and what the second wave was (these are waves of the First Crusade not separate crusades)
Then you need to be specific about what traumatic experiences were endured by the crusaders of the second wave of the First Crusade and why these experiences were so traumatic
Then you need to be clear and specific about how these traumatic experiences reinforced what the crusaders had been promised about how they were doing god’s will and that god was on their side etc.
Then you need a conclusion that summarizes your argument and conclusions.
