My first argument in the paper is that Debussy, through his work titled “Reflets dans l’eau” (Reflections in the water)” pioneered a new form of musical appreciation known as impressionism in music which had features that departed from previous musical forms in that it aimed to create a different musical image dependent on creating mood and atmosphere as opposed to a detailed tone picture. Second, the paper demonstrates that Debussy, through his work, used specific characteristic motifs, and exotic scales such as the whole-tone scale and the octatonic scale, in order to cast the desired musical image upon the listener, by studying these elements of his style, one can understand his intentions, and how he managed to communicate so effectively. Third, I discuss some of the styles that were unique in Debussy’s work in detail, such as the whole-tone scale and the impressionism style that he helped develop in music, and how these styles are used in contemporary cultural arts
