THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE – Assignment
In 1989, New York City was plagued by gruesome and lethal crimes. Every several hours, someone was killed in some sort of attack or shootout. Several assaults were reported in the days following the Central Park assault. There was an epidemic of crack cocaine addiction in the city. The sale of drugs was out of control in New York City. As a result, young minority men were supplied with large sums of money and weapons fueling the gang warfare and at the same time, senselessly destroying families and neighborhoods in New York City.
Please answer one of the following three questions (300-400 words per question) and post your response on Blackboard. (in total max worth 3 pts)
Please then response to one student responses, but it has to be different from the question you choose to respond to. (in total max worth 2 pts)
1-How could the press have reported on the Central Park jogger attack differently during the investigation and trial period in 1989 and 1990, and how might doing this have created a different outcome? Why do you think some people and media outlets were resistant to the new facts of the case?

2-The decision in Miranda v. Arizona in 1966 states the following: “The person in custody must, prior to interrogation, be clearly informed that he has the right to remain silent and that anything he says will be used against him in court; he must be clearly informed that he has the right to consult with a lawyer and to have the lawyer present with him during interrogation, and that if he is indigent (not able to pay for a lawyer), a lawyer will be appointed to represent him.” According to the movie, do you believe that the Central Park Five were aware of and fully understood their rights? What rights and protections should people being interrogated have?
3- This event happened over 30 years ago, so what has changed and what has remained the same in terms of 1) news, reporting and the media 2) racial profiling and awareness of our constitutional rights in communities of color.
