The Yellow Wallpaper by Gilman Character Development Essay

Task One: Choosing Focus Element

The first thing you need to determine is which ONEof the two elements you want to focus your essay on, setting OR character development. Neither is “better” as a choice, and you may not do both. I suggest that you choose the one that you most easily “see” in Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper.” (I understand that most of will discuss both the character and the setting in your essay, but one of the two will be your primary focus!)

Setting or Character Development? Fill in first blank in worksheet at end of lab.

Task Two: Gathering possible evidence

Reviewing your annotated copy of the story, look for all the passages where you see Gilman developing setting or character (whichever your chose).

Task Three: Choosing best evidence

Once you find them all, please select the four passages in the story that you feel best demonstrate how Gilman is (1.) using her setting to support her story’s meaning or (2.) developing the narrator’s character through changes or significant moments.

Task Four: Your Provisional Thesis:

“This story is about… “ Looking at your four quotes on the worksheet, what do you believe this story is about? What does “The Yellow Wallpaper” demonstrate to its reader through an examination of either setting or character development?

Task Five: Components of Provisional Thesis

As in the mini-lesson, you need to evaluate your thesis idea and be sure it is well structured. It should have the story name in it, the author should be given credit for whatever you say the story means, and it should name either setting or character development as the means through which that meaning was made.

Review provisional thesis to be sure it aligns with these conventions. (if confused, review mini-lesson). And adjust provisional thesis if needed.

Task Six: drafting topic sentences

Looking at each quote, what does that particular quote contribute to your argument? Or, said differently, how is Gilman using setting or character development in each of your four quotes? What is your claim about each passage? Specifically how does it support your thesis? Write your assertion above each quote entered above.

These are drafts of your topic sentences.
