The University of Texas Education & Teaching Childrens Theater Discussion

Read the article “Children’s theater” written by Cristina Reina Ruiz and answer the following questions: After reading the article, watch the video “Conversation about theater at school with Ester Trozzo” and according to your opinion based on the readings of the manual what benefits can the child have from being exposed to quality children’s theater? What strategies for the implementation of theater within the classroom caught your attention the most? Mention how you would use any technique (s) in your own classroom?

The video is in Spanish, so to translate add subtitles at the bottom first and on youtube on the settings it should give u options once u clicked settings. click the subtitles /cc option . Next, go to auto-translate. Lastly, scroll till u find English and click on it. The subtitles should appear at the bottom now in English. You really dont have to watch the entire thing. you can skim or watch a lil bit of the video.

The document of the reading was in spanish, however i was able to translate it to english using google translate. I will attach the doc translated already in english. Incase anything I will attach original reading in spanish as well. If you have questions please let me know..

As a personal opinion, I would say that theater in infantile children is very beneficial and I support the idea 100%, because it opens up different ways of seeing theater. For example, in Cristina Ruiz’s article, she mentions how emotion shows them and makes them reflect on the diversity of art in theater. I personally believe that there are many benefits to theater, the fact that they can simply express themselves or act in a different way according to the story helps them understand different emotions inside, it can help to end stereotypes of women and men. Not only that, but there is a different role in theater and it goes according to the fact that it is an art, it has a history behind it and it allows children to explore that in the theatrical world. One of the techniques that I like most that they practice is oral expression, since in the classroom, for the teacher to understand the students, he needs to communicate and for communication to be clear, it should not include crying, shouting or nothing like that. The teacher and the students have to learn each other’s tones when trying to clarify something or if there is a problem. Both students and teachers have to understand that there are different ways of communicating orally depending on the environment and the situation. In general, I would use this technique in my classes as a teacher.

Children being exposed to quality children’s theater can have benefits that help them “stimulate creation and favor the full development of the person,” as Cristina Reina Ruiz mentions. When exposed to this type of art, children discover personal skills that perhaps they did not have knowledge that they processed. It helps them connect to the world of art, and opens the doors of aesthetic sensitivity, reflection and the ability to get emotional, laugh and cry. And it also teaches them about culture. The strategies for the implementation of theater within the classroom that caught my attention were oral expression and mimicry. These strategies help students to express themselves orally, with the use of their bodies and faces. With these elements they not only concentrate on the words they say but also how they can use other types of communication to express themselves, such as shouting, singing, and with noises of all kinds. Also using their bodies and faces they can tell a story, a gesture or a situation. In my classroom I would use oral expression by creating an activity where students can write their own stories and read them aloud to their classmates in an artistic way using elements of the theater.
