The University of Texas at Arlington Jurassic World Movie Literary Critique

Instructions

For the research paper assignment, you will analyze a movie (rated R or lower), using one of the types of literary criticisms that we have studied in this course. Formulate a thesis about your movie. Your thesis should be your opinion, not just a fact, and should be a point you can argue.

You do not need to analyze the entire film. In fact, take a few seconds or a specific scene and focus on all of the details in that short scene. Too many times students summarize the film instead of analyzing the elements. Slow down. Look at the details.

The approach

Once you have a thesis established, search for scholarly works about your criticism, not the movie, within the TCC database that either support or refute your claim.

You should use the same research from your previous essay, the literary criticism essay.

Tip: Use the same quotes from the research. Use those same points to analyze aspects of the movie instead of starting an entirely new essay.

The process

Within the research paper, you will build your argument, using the secondary sources as evidence. Whether you quote directly, paraphrase, or summarize, you must give credit to the source of your information by using parenthetical citations and a works cited page.

Plagiarizing from a scholarly source or another student’s work will result in a zero (0) for the paper with no opportunity for make-up or extra-credit assignments. Don’t just quote or paraphrase someone else’s work. Be sure to explain your evidence by supporting your argument/thesis.

The Details

This is a formal paper, which means no first- or second-person pronouns, no contractions, and no slang. Also, the paper should be no fewer than five pages, not including a works cited page, and should include a minimum of five sources, not including your movie. Five database articles and one movie equals six sources total. The Works Cited page should be page six.

The enhancement

You need to imitate and highlight three “fancy” sentences in your essay just as we practiced in the Sentence Imitating packet.

List model sentences from the packet after your source citations on your Works Cited page. I should be able to match your sentences with the model sentences. In other words, put them in the same, corresponding order.
