Discussion Board Instructions

There will be two Discussion Board Forum assignments in the course. The purpose of the Discussion Board Forums is to generate interaction among students about course topics. Consulting with other believers is an important aspect of exegesis because it helps us become more aware of our own blind spots.

The different perspectives of other believers also give us more understanding of the questions that arise when interpreting and applying Scripture. When we present the results of our study to others for review, it helps us grow in our ability to advocate persuasively for sound interpretations that are based on Scripture. We will use the Discussion Board Forums in this class towards those ends.

Please follow the instructions below for Discussion Board Forum 1 (Module/Week 1) and Discussion Board Forum 2 (Module/Week 7) respectively.

Discussion Board Forum 1:

In this assignment, you will present a careful comparison of three English translations of a selected passage to your classmates. This will be the same passage that you identified in the Passage Selection Quiz.

The first post will be compiled within a formatted document and then posted as a thread to the Discussion Board Forum 1 by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of Module/Week 1. Download the formatted document from the Course Content area and follow the instructions on page 1.

The content of your formatted document should be pasted as a new thread in the Discussion Board Forum 1 area. You should also attach your completed document to the thread. Do not include page 1 in either location (the DB thread or the attachment).

You must reply to two of your classmates’ posts by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of Module/Week 1. Each reply post should be no less than 200 words. You will use the reply posts to help your classmates see significant details in the translation comparison that they may not have noticed/mentioned. You will also suggest issues/questions raised by the translation comparison that may need to be addressed. Since this skill of comparing translations will be important for later Exegetical Essay assignments, the goal of your reply posts is to help your classmates discover what they should analyze/address as they continue to work with their passage in other assignments.

Discussion Board Forum 2:

In this assignment, you will explore the main theological insights that arise from a study of your selected passage. You will work with the same passage that you identified in the Passage Selection Quiz.

In a thread of at least 400 words, address the following questions:

  1. Indicate what your passage is and concisely describe the main point.
  2. What do we learn about God – His character and purposes – from this passage, either directly or indirectly?
  3. Which categories of systematic theology (soteriology, eschatology, ecclesiology, etc.) does your passage relate to, either directly or indirectly?
  4. What are the themes/topics of biblical theology (kingship, covenant, Israel, etc.) that your passage relates to, either directly or indirectly?

Post your thread in the Discussion Board Forum 2 area by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of Module/Week 7. You should also attach a document that includes the content of your thread.

You must reply to two of your classmates’ posts by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of Module/Week 7. Each reply post should be no less than 200 words. You will use the reply posts to help your classmates see significant issues that should be addressed when considering how to apply the main point or theological insights of the passage. The goal is to help your classmates prepare for their Exegetical Essay: Application assignment, which is due in Module/Week 8.
