The Proof of Comprehension Academic Writing & Artefact Analysis Reflection Paper

Assignment Instructions:

Now that you’ve catalogued a number of observations in the two artifacts for Project 2, what conclusions have you come to about writing in the academy? For this assignment, you are reflecting on your artifact analysis. This reflection should be written in the style of a personal response or journal entry, so it’s completely fine to use personal pronouns. Below are some questions you might consider as you develop your reflection:

  • How does each rhetorical situation suggest the use of particular genre conventions or the making of certain rhetorical choices? Or, how does each rhetorical situation seem to discourage the author from making certain kinds of choices?
  • Why do you think some patterns and conventions are shared across artifacts? Why do you think some are unique?
  • Thonney claims academic writers make six moves. After reading artifacts written for an academic audience, do you think Thonney’s claims hold up? Why or why not?
  • How do the moves you catalogued differ from moves you make as a writer? In your writing do you make some of the same moves that you found in the artifacts?
  • To what degree — if any — has the rhetorical analysis of these artifacts given you new ways of conceptualizing how to write?
