Part 1: 900 words
we will be examining the concept of freedom in the French Enlightenment as expressed by three French thinkers: Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Voltaire, who appear to have different ideas of freedom. Through careful reading of our three sources, we will determine what these three men thought about freedom and how they went about determining how others can become free. Throughout our essays, close comparisons among the three thinkers is essential.
Create our own questions, which we can use to probe what these men thought. Each of our thinkers probably has differing perspectives on the questions you raise, or perhaps they do not. Our task is to create a narrative, based upon our own knowledge and insight, encompassing the approaches Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Voltaire took in dealing with freedom. Do we discern any similarities and/or differences among them on how they conceive of freedom? We will have to pry through their writings to figure out how they addressed the freedom issue, but the answers are there. Remember to compare the three in the paragraphs that we write.
