In “Fiesta 1980” the first major flashback occurs on page 93 (“The first time I got sick…”). The 2nd major flashback occurs on page 96 (“I met the Puerto Rican woman…”). And the final major flashback occurs on the bottom of page 99 (“I don’t remember being out of sorts…”). These are flashbacks because they occur as a scene from the past rather than summary. Why do you think Diaz separated the information about his Dad’s affair into three separate flashbacks? Was this effective? Why is each one placed where it is in terms of the overall scene story, which takes place on the day of Tia’s party, the big fiesta?

Answer this question..
“The Husband Stitch” is like a story inside a story, or perhaps a story where the author/narrator breaks the 4th wall and addresses the reader. Talk about the various devices the author uses that were different from other stories you’ve read this term, such as addressing the reader on the first page, and the effect that has. What sub-genre would you consider this story to fall into? Is it an allegory—a sort of parable with a message? If so, what’s the message?
