As you begin to write, consider the writing structures you have been taught. This paper will be significantly longer than a five paragraph essay. This is a comprehensive research paper.
You will need to provide your reader with background information in order for your points to be clear. You may need to define key terms. You may need to provide a historical overview.
Approach your writing as if your reader knows nothing about your topic. If you write from this point of view, it will quickly become obvious that you will need to write much more than you may have initially thought about writing.
Are you overwhelmed yet? Don’t be!
Your assignment is broad and there is a lot to say. Consider using the first part of your paper to set the stage. Provide your reader with background information, historical context or other information that will be useful in helping your reader understand your points.
Use the middle part of your paper to present the facts which support your point of view.
Use the last part of your paper to pull it all together. This means that you will discuss the answer to your question and how your points contribute to that.
Drafting a research paper is complicated. To make sure that you do not omit any of the critical parts of the paper, you should follow a two step process.
- The drafting table – First you will construct each of the parts of the paper separately. The table guides you by reminding you what you need to include
- You will take each piece out of the chart and connect it with transitional ideas and words so the paper will flow smoothly
