Most of the time when we think of measurement, it seems straightforward: the length (in centimeters) of a wire or the weigh (in pounds) of a vehicle. For these we know exactly how to take the measurement. In some cases, there may be some thought as to what measurement is best: Do we measure the life expectancy of a light switch in years or by the number of on/off clicks? Other methods of measuring a variable of interest may be more complicated.
