Term Paper: ABCPro Goes Virtual

This assignment contains two (2) sections: Term Paper and PowerPoint Presentation. You must submit both sections as separate files for the completion of this assignment.Label each file name according to the section of the assignment it is written for. Additionally, you may create and / or assume all necessary assumptions needed for the completion of this assignment.

Imagine that you are a certified Disaster Recovery and Virtualization Technology professional for ADviseConsulting group. You have been hired to manage a project to implement for ABCPro, a local organization, disaster recovery plans using virtualization technologies to ensure business continuity in the event of a disaster.

Background:
ABCPro is a grocery retailer company located in Orlando, Florida. The IT environment consists of 85 servers and 220 computers, 70 of which are laptops used by remote consultants. The facility has five (5) stack switches located throughout the building, all connecting to an eight (8) port GIGAswitch.

In the existing distributed processing environment, each processing node (server and workstation) has its own direct attached storage (DAS).

This distribution of storage is ultimately inefficient. Across all these silos of storage, there are problems associated with the difficulty of backing up and recovering fragmented silo storage (i.e., LAN bandwidth usage); some are close to maximum capacity while others are underutilized

Project overview and purpose:
The company desires to replace 40 end-of-life servers. In discussions with you, the options for virtualization are explored. Specifically, the company representatives consider purchasing a few powerful virtualization host servers to host applications on virtual machines instead of 40 individual physical boxes. In exploring virtualization solutions, such as VMware, Microsoft hyper-V, or Citrix XenServer, the company representatives realize that a consolidated storage architecture is required to provide high availability, rapid deployment, and dynamic provisioning for virtual servers.

The storage solution selected will also be used to provide a consolidated backup environment for both virtual and non-virtual servers to improve overall availability and recoverability. The company understands that consolidation also means single point of failure for all attached servers. To ensure safety of the consolidation, the solution has to have significant built-in redundancy.

This new virtualized platform will present new opportunities and risks to the company. It will effectively be an internal cloud configuration, with rapidly deployable and adjustable partitions, but will require new policies, procedures, and security measures.

Lastly, they want you to develop risk-control policies and countermeasures.

Key deliverables:

  1. Risk-control policies and countermeasures.
  2. Disaster recovery and business management plans through virtualization.
  3. Effective replication and backup of system images and enterprise data.
  4. Enable high availability.
  5. Network consolidation storage deployment.
  6. Address security vulnerabilities attached with virtualization and propose mitigation.
  7. Discuss the necessary revisions to internal procedures for upgrades, change management, server allocation, and disaster recovery.

Section 1: Term Paper
  1. Write a ten to fifteen (10-15) page paper in which you:

  1. Specify the manner in which you use virtualization for disaster recovery and business continuity in case of local failures or small-scale disasters.
  2. Suggest one (1) strategy and one (1) type of virtualization technology to enable server consolidation, including support for virtualized infrastructure. Provide a rationale to support your suggestion.
  3. Recommend the type of network storage technology to provide high availability, rapid deployment, and dynamic provisioning for virtual servers. Provide a rationale to support your response.
  4. Provide a central storage platform for faster and more effective replication and backup of system images and enterprise data.
  5. Formulate the new key processes and procedures that will be necessary to support this virtualized environment, including upgrades, change management, server allocation, and off-site disaster         recovery. Justify your response.
  6. Graphically depict the physical and virtualized network layout, using Visio or an open source tool such as Dia. Note: The graphically depicted solution is not included in the required page length.
  7. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Section 1 of your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
  • Include charts or diagrams created in Visio or Dia. The completed diagrams / charts must be imported into the Word document before the paper is submitted.

Section 2: PowerPoint Presentation
Identified risks to an organization can be addressed through the use of countermeasures. Certain risks can be mitigated with specific devices (i.e., firewall) but there are other risks that must be dealt with through the use of policies (i.e., mistakes by staff posing a threat to information).

  2. Create a eight to ten (8-10) slide PowerPoint presentation in which you:

  1. Outline the main steps that you would take to identify the risks to ABCPro and develop risk-control policies and countermeasures.
  2. Speculate on the potential implications of a major server disaster on the ABCPro brand overall (e.g. decreased brand reputation, customer loss, etc.) Next, of the implications that you have identified, differentiate between those that on-site virtualization can and cannot mitigate. Justify your response.
  3. Create bulleted speaking notes for your presentation to the executive board in the Notes section of the PowerPoint. Note: You may create or assume any fictitious names, data, or scenarios that have not been established in this assignment for a realistic flow of communication.
  4. Use a professional style ot graphically convey the information.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Analyze system security and preventative measures and disaster recovery planning.
  • Explain systems security and change control policies.
  • Compare and contrast NAS, DAS, and SAN technologies.
  • Analyze and configure data-storage technologies.
  • Explain the concept and types of virtualization.
  • Explain, configure, and implement virtualization technologies.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in disaster recovery and virtualization.
  • Write clearly and concisely about topics related to disaster recovery and virtualization using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.
