Temple University Chick Fil A Business Culture Discussion Posts

I’m working on a management question and need a sample draft to help me understand better.

You have to answer like you are talking to someone and give your own opinion, either you agree or disagree.

First post:

  1. Describe the business culture at Chick-fil-A.

The business culture at Chick-fil-A is that of the ethics culture (David et al., 2020). Chick-fil-A established a corporation of franchises adhering to the code of ethics (David et al., 2020). Chick-fil-A consistently maintains a healthy and employee-satisfied environment. Chick-fil-A has a high retention of employees due to the healthy workplace.

2. To what extent does Chick-fil-A’s culture account for Chick-fil-A’s performance?

Chick-fil-A consistently maintains high performance. Compared to its competitors in the quick-service restaurants (QSR), Chick-fil-A produces revenue that outpowers the competition. Chick-Fi-La has $4.4 million in per restaurant annual restaurant sales (David et al., 2020). The competition KFC has $1 million, Zaxby’s has $2.3 billion, and Popeyes has $1.4 million in per restaurant annual sales (David et al., 2020).

Chick-fil-A has a loyal customer base that derives from the commitment to the firm’s core values (David et al., 2020). Chick-fil-A, unlike its competition, is closed on Sundays. This strategy and commitment increase employee morale. Furthermore, Chick-fil-A’s customer service exceeds competition which, in turn, strengthens customer loyalty (David et al., 2020).

3. How would you grade Chick-fil-A’s triple-bottom-line? Why?

David et al. (2020) indicate the triple bottom line considers the totality of social, financial, and environmental positions. The triple-bottom-line strategy maximizes the performance of all three positions (David et al., 2020). In regards to strength and social sentiment, Chick-fil-A scores high. In contrast, Chick-fil-A scores low environmentally due to its use of polystyrene foam cups. The cups are made using chemicals that are harmful to humans and animals (Mayfield, 2018). The cups are low-cost and can keep liquids hot and cold. Chick-fil-A earns a high grade for its triple bottom line. The financial and social numbers are superseding the competition.

4. Should Chick-fil-A change its policy and be open on Sundays since all its major rivals are open on Sunday? Why or why not?

Chick-fil-A’s policy to close on Sundays has been successful for the firm and creates differentiation (Marshal & Johnston, 2019). Although revenue may increase due to the opening on Sunday, the employee morale may decrease. The high employee morale adds to Chick-fil-A’s differentiation from other QSR. Maintaining high employee morale increases retention and lessens the turnover rate. The lower turnover rate, in turn, reduces costs associated with training new employees frequently.

Second post:

1. Describe the business culture at Chick-fil-A.

Chick-fil-A promotes a family atmosphere where all workers are treated equally with honor, respect, and dignity (Our Culture and Values n.d.). The company says that the benefits, practices, and policies support the organization’s commitment to enhance the corporate culture (Our Culture and Values n.d.). I went to Chick-fil-A at six o’clock one morning and asked the person taking my order what they thought of the business culture. The sweet lady said that it was an organization that stood for principles that promoted genuine teamwork. She loved her job and could not think of a better place to work than with this corporation. I reached out to more people than had been or are still currently employed with Chick-fil-A, and they all gave remarkably similar statements. My non-scientific search leads me to believe that the message that Chick-Fil-A writes on their website is the culture they create. A culture where people encourage, help, and support one another.

2. To what extent does Chick-fil-A’s culture account for Chick-fil-A’s performance?

Promoting the three C’s: character, competency, and chemistry, the employee treats everyone they meet, whether coworker or customer, with kindness and respect (Kruse, 2016). This character quality is the same no matter what position an employee has earned (Kruse, 2016). Chick-Fil-A’s policy of investing in people is the key to enhancing and growing the company culture (Kruse, 2016). Cultivating a culture where people can depend on the word you speak breeds trust. Once employees understand that the manager’s word is trustworthy, the employee develops respect for the manager and other coworkers who share in the characteristic of honesty (Kruse, 2016). Chick-fil-A understands the concept of social responsibility and goes beyond the legal obligations to protect and enhance the work culture for all employees (David et al., 2020).

The founder of Chick-fil-A believed and lived out his leadership style of being a servant leader (Kruse, 2016). This philosophy gets passed down in Chick-fil-A as the second-mile service (Kruse, 2016). In addition, Chick-fil-A’s culture takes ethical work practices with seriousness, and the result is that this organization consistently outscores their competitors regarding satisfaction for customer experience (Comm, 2019).

3. How would you grade Chick-fil-A’s triple-bottom-line? Why?

This corporation gets an A in every category. The triple bottom line is often referred to as the 3P’s, referring to people, planet, and profits (David et al., 2020). Chick-fil-A does well with the social responsibility part of the triple bottom line. This corporation holds people in high regard, whether employees or customers (Kruse, 2016). This company has awarded approximately fifteen million dollars in scholarships to over six thousand employees (Giving Back n.d.). In addition, the corporation has worked with programs such as Junior Achievement and provided leadership development curriculum for thirty-one thousand high schools (Giving Back n.d.)

Chick-fil-A holds caring for the planet with the utmost importance (Giving Back n.d.). When Chick-fil-A has extra food, the company donates the food (Giving Back n.d.). This corporation works towards creating a zero waste to landfill campus. They take steps to not be wasteful with building products or with the food they produce (Giving Back n.d.). Chick-fil-A has served more than four million meals to people in need through the shared table program (Giving Back n.d.). In addition, Chick-fil-A has worked to reduce the use of plastic by a little over eight million pounds. They accomplished this by introducing new bowls and reducing plastic in the cutlery (Giving Back n.d.).

As far as sustainability went in 2020, this corporation earned 842.76 million dollars (Net earnings of Chick-fil-A 2020 2021). The profits for 2019 were 670.12 million (Net earnings of Chick-fil-A 2020 2021). These profits show substantial growth. Chick-fil-A, like other restaurants, picks out the location for the restaurant to be built (John, 2018). Each operator has to complete a multiple-week training program before taking over the operations of a franchise (John, 2018). It is this dedication that keeps the profits flowing. If the manager does not understand, care, or invest in the process, the uncaring attitude will affect all 3P’s.

4. Should Chick-fil-A change its policy and be open on Sundays since all its major rivals are open on Sunday? Why or why not?

Chick-fil-A should not change its policy. They are not affected by closing their doors one day a week in a negative way. People respect organizations that show a commitment to their beliefs. This organization has demonstrated a commitment to Christian values and stood by them. The company is growing, meeting, and exceeding the 3Ps. Therefore, they do not need to change their policy regarding closing on Sundays. In a hectic week, driving by a Chick-fil-A on a Sunday reminds me that the next day is Monday, which is funny and true. The only time I was disappointed that they were closed on Sunday was when my nonverbal autistic child spoke up and asked specifically for Chick-fil-A. It would have been wonderful to reward him for his words when he said them, but we were there when they open their doors the next day.

Third post:

Describe the business culture at Chick-fil-a.

Chick-fil-a is a well-known and established restaurant in the food industry, and they carry a great amount of cultural ethics (David et al., 2020). One example of demonstrating ethical culture is closing the restaurant for employees to spend time with friends and family on the weekends (David et al., 2020). Even though the restaurant is only open for business six out of the seven days of the week, Chick-fil-a is the largest chicken quick service restaurant (David et al., 2020).

To what extent does Chick-fil-a’s culture account for Chick-fil-a’s performance?

Chick-fil-a not only focuses on their top-notch food quality, but they take great pride in customer service as well. The total amount of annual revenue is $5 billion, which includes all 2,200 Chick-fil-a’s in the nation (David et al., 2020). When breaking down the total annual revenue, each Chick-fil-a brings in roughly $4.4 million, which is the highest of any restaurant in the United States (David et al., 2020).

The customer service is non-negotiable when comparing Chick-fil-a to other quick service restaurants. In fact, research shows Chick-fil-a employees say “thank you” or present with a smile 97% of the time (David et al., 2020). By not only creating an environment to accommodate to the customers, the employees can be valued as well by having a guaranteed day off in the week to go to Church or spend time with family.

How would you grade Chick-fil-a’s triple-bottom-line? Why?

The triple-bottom-line emphasizes good ethics is the key to a successful firm (David et al., 2020). By focusing on this strategy, there is a structure set in place for employees to follow and abide by, such as establishing goals for finance, social service, and even surroundings (David et al., 2020). The one category Chick-fil-a scores high in is social service. I went through the Chick-fil-a drive-thru today, and I was greeted with a big smile and concern about how my day was going. Then, once my order was taken, my food was in my hand in a matter of 42 seconds (I counted because I knew I was going to write about my experience in this paper). By having quick service and polite employees, the experience is top-notch for all customers.

Should Chick-fil-a change its policy and be open on Sundays since all major rivals are open on Sunday? Why or why not?

I do not think Chick-fil-a should change their policy of being closed on Sundays. By being open only 6 out of 7 days of the week, the company is still bringing in more money than other competitors. The ethical reason to provide employees a day off to spend freely is an example of the care and quality the restaurant not only shows for the customers, but the employees as well. I do not think the restaurant is by any means hurting for additional revenue. The restaurant is highly valued and has loyal customers, even by being closed on Sundays.
