3. The Guiding Principles to review are :

  • Developing and sustaining positive relationships are the foundation for applying the knowledge base and for demonstrating the core competencies. These relationships: adult to child, child to child, professional to parent, professional to professional, and professional to community, are essential to the coordination of each child’s learning experiences, opportunities, and outcomes.
  • The family has a key role in nurturing their children’s growth and learning and supporting the programs in which their children are participating. Respectful and reciprocal relationships are critical.
  • Understanding and applying the social and cultural context of children and their families is essential to creating developmentally and individually appropriate learning environments and to develop positive relationships.
  • Professionals have a role as designers and builders of the world in which each child lives while in early childhood or school-age. They must understand the interplay between children’s experiences, environments, relationships and well-being, development, and learning.
  • It is the responsibility of every professional to guide children’s behavior and mentor children’s understanding of socially appropriate ways to self-regulate, communicate, and be socially competent to become successful and productive members of society.
