Choose the scenario that pertains to your field of study (clinical mental health counseling). After reading the scenario, think about how you would use the BLS skills (Ch. 8) to talk with the client/student. Write an example of each of the following:
- Open question
- Closed question
- Encourager
- Paraphrase
- Reflection of feeling
- Summary
Student (School)
“Here I am…again. It’s mid-semester, and I’m way behind in all my work, just barely passing a couple of courses. It’s like I can’t think ahead—one of the guys will come in and want to party and I say sure, and then the next day I realize I didn’t finish a paper or something. I do the same thing every semester. What’s wrong with me, can’t I learn from my past?”
Parent (Clinical)
“He’s a good kid and means well, but he’s reluctant to take advice and wisdom from his elders and makes too many mistakes before realizing that it would have been easier to take the advice.”
