Option 1: Literary Analysis Essay (Choose A or B)
The first project option is to write a literary analysis essay. This is nothing new to you, and if you feel more comfortable writing analytically than a bit creatively, this may be the choice for you! The essay should be 5 paragraphs (intro, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion), MLA formatting, and clearly answer and defend whichever prompt you choose.
A. Choose one of the main characters, Jing Mei or her mother, and analyze how Tan’s use of characterization helps develop the overall theme of the text.
B. Close read and analyze this passage from the story. Then, in a well organized essay, analyze how language is used to develop the characters and how their changes help develop the overall theme of the text. [This one is slightly trickier, in my opinion.]
