Directions:

1. Read Chapters 5-8 of Pride by Ibi Zoboi.

2. Consult the Reading Journal Overview Slides & Rubric for

guidance.

3. Consult the overarching question and guidelines below.

4. Write a 400 word reading journal that focuses on theme and

characterization. This will count as a Major Writing Assignment Grade!!

Overarching Questions

How does Zoboi utilize different literary elements and devices

to characterize Zuri and Darius and develop themes of the

novel in Chapters 5-8?

➢ Someliteraryelementstoconsider:

■ Tone

■ Imagery

■ Diction & Style

■ Figurative Language

■ Selection of Detail

■ Characterization (HOW the characters are being developed)

➢ Themestoconsider: ■ Growth

■ Class

■ Pride

■ Judgement

■ Change

■ Identity

■ Gentrification

– 400 words, minimum (This is NOT a maximum. Make sure you are fully following directions)

– Proper MLA formatting: header, heading, title, and appropriate double spacing/parenthetical citations. Consult Purdue Owl for guidance!

– Cite two quotes from the text (Chapters 5-8 only. While you can obviously use Chapters 1-4 for context, your close reading here should be focused on Chapters 5-8.)

– Be sure that you are going in depth explaining your quotes. Do not use quotes just as page filler – this will result in a low grade!

– Keep your writing focused and analytical. I recommend focusing only on two literary elements and two themes max so that your writing is precise and succinct.
