SUNY College at Old Westbury Heuristic Evaluation Discussion

Assignment:

In your responses to your peers, you will:

  • Provide a suggestion that could either improve the design or remedy the violated heuristic.
  • Suggest an evaluation method, other than a heuristic review, that could be used to evaluate the usability of the website and explain how this method differs from the heuristic review.

PEER POST # 1

For this week’s discussion, I have selected to do a heuristic review on www.apple.com. I selected www.apple.com because I am an avid Apple user and frequent the website. One thing that I enjoy about the website is that there are no ads other than a few for their own products. On most sites, there is an annoying bar on both sides of the webpage with a ton of ads. The only recommendation I could find is less clutter on the mainpage. The main page consists of a lot of information (clutter) which could be a good thing or a bad thing. A lot of users may not know about the additional products Apple offers so it could be beneficial or could also be perceived as clutter.

PEER POST # 2

I choose to do a heuristic review of the Barnes and Noble website. I commonly go to the website to order some books and manga to read on my free time. I never really had a issue with using the website and I found it easy to navigate towards. However, I believe that it fails the Heuristic design of having a aesthetic and minimalist design. On their website they frequently have ads for other novels or specials going on but these ads tend to take a large portion of the screen, which I find to be personally annoying. These advertisements also repeat throughout the website and take up large portions of the screen when doing other tasks. This causes some frustrations when navigating as well. I personally believe that the use of these ads make it fail the minimalist design element for the Heuristic design.
