This week, we were introduced to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA spells out broad mandates for services to students with disabilities of all kinds. These services include evaluation and eligibility determination, appropriate education and an individualized education plan (IEP), and education in the least restrictive environment (LRE). This week, you will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of IDEA. Be sure to specifically discuss the impact of mandating that children with disabilities be educated in the LRE. Please use the information from the textbook to inform your response and cite when appropriate. Finally, think back and reflect on your own schooling during middle and late childhood and how students with learning disabilities were (or were not diagnosed) and helped (or not helped). What is your opinion of how your elementary school worked with students with disabilities? Please write in paragraph-form and respond to two classmates.
