Hello Professor Liebert-Hall and Classmates,

  • My name is Paula, after a long struggle with my past I was able to return to school and earn my bachelor’s degree with honors in 2017. Unfortunately, my marriage failed but I’ve been blessed with two beautiful children. My son is the oldest and he’s currently looking to return to the restaurant management industry after losing his position due to covid-19 which closed the doors of the restaurant where he worked prior to the shut-down. My daughter is currently a sophomore in college, and she too lost her position due to covid-19 but my daughter is going to focus on school until after we move next. Once I know where we are going to move then my daughter will look for another position close to home. I currently work in the Life Insurance industry, licensed in New Jersey, Michigan, Texas and plan to add more states soon. I have recently found a new opportunity that fits into the vision of the nonprofit ministry I am starting this summer. I work with a small group of agents who focus on helping senior veterans. We explain to the veterans the latest changes that the VA has made as it pertains to burial and cremation, what burial expenses are covered (which isn’t much), how they can apply for affordable coverage and receive help with planning their funeral through Funeral Planning of America. It’s a blessing to be in a position to help these veterans especially those who don’t realize that most of the costs falls upon the family when they pass away.
  • I plan to focus on creating a new business plan for my nonprofit ministry. This month we plan to go out into the community to provide sandwiches and water to the homeless. I also have planned to begin helping seniors understand their Medicare options and choose the right plan for them during this year’s annual enrollment period. Now, that I’ve come into this new opportunity I am hoping to do more with the senior veterans as well. I am so excited about every opportunity that is coming my way, but I want to make sure that I don’t become overwhelmed trying to implement everything at once. This is where I believe this class will help. I want to be sure that I keep my goals realistic. My ministry has a large vision and its worldwide, therefore I want to be very careful how I handle every step. There are currently five divisions: the youth & young adults, men & women’s empowerment, seniors, veterans and the homeless.
  • What resonated with from the Tio video this week is the part where Austin Allan talks about how he didn’t listen to those who told him that he should produce his product differently. Austin believed in his idea and moved forward with what was in his heart despite those who didn’t support him.  I too have gone through this myself. When I talked about the new opportunity to help veterans, I still heard some negativity. I’ve not only had to endure this attitude with my insurance business but also with the ministry. I often hear things like…. “Why don’t you apply for a job? Building a clientele cost too much money! If you start a nonprofit, how will you get paid?”
