After completing your BSN, you accepted the position of Unit Coordinator (UC) for a 25-bed surgical unit. The previous UC retired after 27 years on the unit. The Director of Nursing told you the UC had been there 5 years too long and left a team that needed some revitalization.
Since you took over the position, you have been working to build a strong team, build trust and accountability, and encourage good communication.
Recently, however, you have seen that on the days when you are not present, the unit is staffed with 1-2 more nurses than the patient acuity and the staffing mix warrant. A Unit Coordinator from another unit said he walked past your floor and noticed staff websurfing and spending time chatting in the break room.
Describe your actions and the rationales for your actions to address this problem while moving forward with strong team building.
