SU Thought Experiment About Bitcoin Regularisation Research Paper

The first mandatory assignment, due on THURSDAY is to read a relatively short paper (“Bitcoin Governance as a Decentralized Financial Market Infrastructure”) on the Bitcoin economy and governance and write a short paper. As you will see from the reading, which you will find attached to this posting and in the FILES portion of our course, we will look at Bitcoin as an economic engine with its own system of ‘laws’ and governance. I believe you will find the topic interesting, and in most sections of the paper understandably related to our studies of economics and the law.

Your first mandatory assignment is a thought experiment: After reading the paper, assume that you are fully in charge of all aspects of Bitcoin. You have the power to set the economic goals and governance framework for the use and exchanges of Bitcoin. (By the way, if any of you achieved this lofty state, please remember your lowly instructor and cohort members which you decide how to spend your billions of coins. Ahem.) Please write a minimum 3, maximum 5 page essay on how you would address the law and policy issues of the economic Bitcoin engine. You may discuss external research you have found in any language, but please remember that when you do, even in paragraphs, you must provide inline and end citations in APA format. The page count EXCLUDES the cover page and any reference page that you’ll add.

As you have taught me during this course, different legal systems, ethics, and traditions differ across our student body. I think it will be fascinating for me to see how that plays out as you write this paper. (Please try to integrate with Chinese legal system)

Your paper SHOULD NOT discuss block chain technology or computer operations, or any of the mechanics of exchanging coins or fractions thereof. Rather, expansively describe your vision and means of a virtual world governance system (essentially a system of laws) within a closed Bitcoin economic environment and also describe your vision’s potential economic impacts on Bitcoin.
