Principles of Research and Evidence-Based Practice
Healthcare professionals face a number of challenges every day. In addition, the Covid 19 pandemic has affected the work of healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, in a significant way. In order to meet those challenges, nurses have to constantly improve their skills and knowledge. One of the main causes of the effective work of nurses is strongly connected to research and evidence-based practice. Therefore, this paper attempts to dwell more upon the research and evidence-based practice in nursing.
To begin with, research in nursing plays an important role in the provision of treatment for patients. As the article called “Nursing and Nursing Education: Public Policies and Private Actions” points out “nursing research develops knowledge about health and the promotion of health over the full lifespan, care of persons with health problems and disabilities, and nursing actions to enhance the ability of individuals to respond effectively to actual or potential health problems.” (“Nursing Research: Definitions and Directions’ ‘, 1983, para. 5) This means that the process of research improves the healthcare system and thus, better the provision of quality to patients. In addition, the benefit of research might also be strongly connected to the fact that “the information obtained by a nurse researcher can be disseminated to nurses who work directly with the individuals to whom the research applies.” (Tingen et al., 2009, para. 17) In the whole, nursing research has a tremendous impact on the professional nursing practice and the quality of healthcare. Concerning the essence of nursing research, the main principles of the given type of practice are the following” respect for patient’s freedom and rights, protection of human health, and dignity of human subjects.
Apart from nursing research, evidence-based practice also plays a crucial role in the healthcare environment as well as involves certain principles. In fact, “evidence-based practice (EBP) is the process of collecting, processing, and implementing research findings to improve clinical practice, the work environment, or patient outcomes.” (Christman, 2014, para. 1) This means that the given type of practice helps nurses provide the highest quality of care to patients. Unlike search practice, evidence-based practice in nursing has one main principle. Accordion gto the article “Evidence-based management”, “a fundamental principle of evidence-based practice is that the quality of our decisions is likely to improve the more we make use of trustworthy evidence – in other words, the best available evidence.” (Barends, E., Rousseau, D., & Briner, , 2014, p. ) In general, this principle as well those in research practice can be implemented through training. Despite the fact that training can be expensive for hospitals, it is still important to exempt them since they might lead to growth of healthcare.
To conclude, there are a number of principles of research and evidence-based practice in nursing that have to be considered in the volatile healthcare environment. They are the following: respect for patient’s freedom and rights, protection of human health, dignity of human subjects, and the use of the best available evidence. If nurses, including advanced practice nurses, follow all those principles, they might not only provide effective care of patients but also contribute to the growth and development of the healthcare industry. In general, research and evidence-based practice should be implemented in healthcare on a regular basis due to various challenges existing in the world right now, including the Covid 19 pandemic.
