Each student will author a strategic communication plan that aligns to at least one theory and addresses a particular organizational effort (i.e., the American Association of Dermatology creating awareness of skin cancer among African Americans) and its need to change a specific human behavior (i.e., encourage the daily use of sunscreen by African Americans while encouraging regular visits to dermatologists), using the ROPES process (see Chapter 5 of “Introduction to Strategic Public Relations: Digital, Global and Socially Responsible Communication”).

The goal of this assignment is to learn appropriate research, format and criteria for successful strategic communication plans. The strategic communication plan should also address specific concepts/theories addressed throughout the course. There are 5 page length requirements for this assignment; the length of the paper will depend upon the depth of the issue. However, regardless of the issue you are addressing, all details of the assignment must be met. Refer to the rubric on page 6 for specific grading criteria as below:

Content

(1) The topic and paper align with course materials and is applied to an issue in an organizational setting in strategic communication.

(2) You author a strategic communication plan that addresses a particular organizational effort and its need to change a specific human behavior.

(3) The paper demonstrates appropriate research, format and criteria for successful strategic communication plans via the ROPES process.

(4) The paper aligns to at least one theory.

Contextualization/Attribution

(1) You demonstrate you can analyze, synthesize and apply the ROPES process to an organizational and behavioral change situation using PR tools.

(2) You demonstrate you can analyze, synthesize and apply theory/concepts to a communication situation.

(3) You apply all phases of the ROPES process with comprehensive content.

Contribution

(1) You enhance our understanding of PR and strategic communication planning in a particular context, e.g. making connections with readings.

(2) Your suggested strategies are comprehensive and include tactical details.

Clarity

(1) You organize your material thoughtfully/transparently, and you express yourself clearly and appropriately.

(2) You organize your presentation logically, make your audience aware of your logic

Style/Mechanics

(1) The final paper is clearly written and organized

(2) You express yourself without grammatical and spelling errors.

(3) The final paper is error-free APA 7 with proper citing of any text citations and references.
