ESSAY 3: Research on the Causes & Consequences of Stereotyping
Writing Prompt: Stereotyping can lead to changes in behavior, social privilege and inequalities in
society, as well as prejudice, discrimination, and oppression. Stereotyping can occur about any
aspect of identity that makes people different from one another. How are the ideas of these
preconceptions spread and continued in our society? How are they harmful to our society as a
whole?
Choose one ASPECT of IDENTITY to work with. What culture, ethnicity, gender, age,
religion, sexual preference, etc. will you focus your research on?
Research the CAUSES and CONSEQUENCES: Where do you see harmful prejudices and
stereotypes about this identity perpetuated (spread and continued) in American society?
What are the negative consequences of these stereotypes for both the population being
stereotyped and our society as a whole?
Write 900-1200 words (approx. 3-4 pages) ANALYZING stereotypes of the identity chosen
and ARGUING what you see as the important causes and consequences of these stereotypes.
Use at least three sources for supporting examples or evidence. These sources need to be
integrated into your writing as direct-quotations, paraphrases, or summaries (use IQE—
quote sandwich form).
Cite your sources with in-text information and a Works Cited page that follows the rules
for MLA format (see the OWL Purdue website and our Library website for more help).
