Statistics & Data Analysis NBA Defensive Rating Analysis Report

  1. Think of a statistic that you would be interested in learning about and think of a claim or challenging question. You can either find data that proves a claim or common assumption or find data that would contradict a common assumption. I’ve provided some suggestions but feel free to pick your own.
  2. Find data (Google scholar / CDC / .gov websites) that relates to the statistic that you are interested in.  You should have a minimum of 30 data points and here are some suggested data sources.
  3. Display your data in an organized manner and submit the data in an Excel sheet.

PART 2 – Data Calculations (use Stat Crunch or Excel) (4 points)

  1. Find the Mean & St. Deviation
  2. Find the 5-Number Summary
  3. Find the least squares regression equation
  4. Find the correlation coefficient

PART 3 – Data Displays (use Stat Crunch or Excel) (3 points)

  1. Draw a Box Plot —  clearly labeled
  2. Draw a Histogram of the data — clearly labeled
  3. Draw a Scatter Plot with the least squares regression line — clearly labeled

PART 4 – Interpretation (17 points)

  1. What sampling method was used?
  2. Could any other sampling methods have affected your data differently?
  3. State at least two biases that could have been present or overlooked.
  4. Name at least 2 lurking or confounding variables in your data.
  5. Write a statement regarding the position of the mean and median in relation to each other and why this is occurring.
  6. Which of the two measures of center are more reliable and why?
  7. What is P90 for your data.  Interpret in a complete sentence what P90 means in the context of your data?
  8. Using the empirical rule, what values are considered significantly high and significantly low?
  9. Are there any outliers?
  10. Regardless of whether there are outliers or not, what do the significantly high or low numbers mean within the context of your topic?  In other words, can you think of anything that might cause outliers?
  11. Would you say the distribution of your data is normal or right/left skewed?
  12. Does a linear relation exist based on the value of the correlation coefficient?
  13. Is there evidence to suggest possible causation?
  14. What is your interpretation of the y-intercept?
  15. What is your interpretation of the slope?
  16. Use your equation to predict the value of the response variable, based on a value of the explanatory variable of your choice.  Explain your choice.
  17. What do you find interesting about the data, the correlation, and any implications that this correlation suggests?
