Clinical Experience 4

The Electronic Medical Record system used on my clinical practice site is the Epic EMR system. Epic was founded in 1979. It mainly focuses on medical groups like rehab centers, independent practices, multi-specialty groups, academic medical centers, and community hospitals.

The pros of the Epic EHR (Electronic health record) system include improved workflows, improved productivity and compliance, enhanced patient care, and enhanced reporting and data analytics. Epic leads to improved workflows because it allows the healthcare organization to customize their EHR system and refine work practice procedures (Alpert, 2016). This streamlines the daily efforts of employees and reduces any extra work. Epic also improves patient care by providing better patient-to-provider communication and enhancing coordination of patient care. Also, Epic provides nurses and other healthcare providers with reliable information, efficient workflows, and improved tools, which leads to increased productivity. The EMR system reduces the resources required to satisfy compliance directives. It enables my clinical practice site to optimize its records by revisiting and refining information that is considered important (Alpert, 2016). It also allows the clinic to identify any prospective data integrity problems.

Even though Epic is implemented by several large hospitals across the United States, including my clinical practice site, it has several cons. The first con is that the EMR system brings extra bugs with each contemporary update. The managers of Epic do not troubleshoot updates before they are released for use. The second disadvantage is the low-quality training provided to the users of Epic. Nurses and other professionals receive inadequate training on how to use the Epic EMR system.

E-prescription is incorporated on the Epic system. The E-prescription allows nurses and other healthcare professionals in the clinic to enter prescription data into a desktop computer or other computing devices such as laptops, tablets and securely transfer the information to pharmacies utilizing the internet and a special software program (Milinovich & Kattan, 2018).

The EMR system has adaptive learning. It stores treatment preferences in an adaptive learning engine. Learning to use an electronic medical record system like Epic is complex. Epic manages the billing cycle, clinician activity, and patient history. It also uses large amounts of patient information to enhance care utilizing historical trends that denote a probable diagnosis (Johnson, 2016). It also coordinates sound and care warnings of possible detrimental events. Due to this complexity, usage and mastery of the system are challenging. Epic system provides adaptive and online learning to reduce the EHR system training and minimize expenses.

Epic EMR system has promised to include an Incorporated patient doorway in the future. Even though Epic EMR is cloud-based it cannot operate in the absence of internet connectivity (Milinovich & Kattan, 2018). However, the managers of Epic are working to ensure that connectivity issues will not interrupt clinicians. In the future, physicians will be able to work offline and the information with sync when they have internet connectivity again.

Epic EHR has effective image and documentation management capability. Documentation is updated in real-time. The system provides complete documentation that includes parameters such as allergies, laboratory results, and imaging results like MR, CT scan, and X-ray images (Johnson, 2016). It also allows healthcare providers to use medical information in ambulance units, imaging facilities, laboratories, and pharmacies.
