Lecture Review:  4

Topic:  Review of Lectures 1-7

Name(s)

Dataset and coding sheet:  Low Birth Weight

Description:

The goal of this study was to identify risk factors associated with giving birth to a low birth weight baby (weighing less than 2500 grams).  Data were collected on 189 women, 59 of which had low birth weight babies and 130 of which had normal birth weight babies.  Four variables which were thought to be of importance were age, weight of the subject at her last menstrual period, race, and the number of physician visits during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Questions: (Please use the code sheet to make sure everything is established correctly in SPSS)

1.    A researcher thinks that those babies that were born with a weight greater than 2500 grams will have been born from moms who had a higher mean body weight in their last menstrual period than those babies who were born with a weight less than 2500 grams.  So, is the mean bodyweight of mothers significantly heavier in those who birthed babies heavier than 2500g as compared to those who birthed babies less than 2500g?

a.    Please write out the null and research hypothesis.

b.    Is this situation’s research hypothesis a one or two tailed hypothesis?  Explain.

c.     Please produce an appropriate visual aid illustrating this scenario.

d.    Please provide a summary table for this scenario that gives the following statistics, N, MEAN, MEDIAN, STD DEVIATION, VARIANCE, MIN, MAX.

e.     Are there any potential outliers for this scenario?  Please support with a visual.

2.    Please produce a summary table displaying the measures of central tendency, dispersion and distributional shape for the following variables

a.    AGE

                                              i.     What is the most appropriate measure of central tendency? Why?

b.    LWT

                                              i.     What is the most appropriate measure of central tendency? Why?

c.     RACE

                                              i.     What is the most appropriate measure of central tendency? Why?

3.    A researcher thinks that the mean birth weight of the babies will be different in those moms who had a history of hypertension vs. those moms who didn’t.

a.    Please identify the independent and dependent variable.

                                              i.     How are each measured?

b.    Please write out the null and research hypothesis.

c.     Is this situation’s research hypothesis a one or two tailed hypothesis?  Explain.

d.    Please produce an appropriate visual aid illustrating this scenario.

4.    Please assess the variable BWT for normality.

a.    Demonstrate visually with explanation.

b.    Demonstrate quantifiably with explanation.

5.    Please provide a summary table showing the mean, standard deviation, n, min and max for the variable BWT stratified by those moms who have/had hypertension vs. not having hypertension.

6.    Please provide a visual aid that shows the proportion of people in the study by race.

7.    Please provide a visual aid that shows the mean difference in BWT by uterine irritability clustered by smoking status
