Punishment – to use or not to use??
* The book and readings indicate that the conditions under which you would use a punishment procedure are:
* if there was an urgent need to reduce the occurrence of the behavior, and,
* there were failed attempts to use only positive reinforcement.
Unfortunately, ignoring inappropriate behavior and reinforcing appropriate behavior do not always produce the desired reduction in unacceptable behavior.
An effective but controversial means of reducing behavior is to use punishment. ** note: punishment should almost never be used alone
* If you HAD to choose a method of punishment to use, which would you choose to use?
*Describe the targeted behavior you would choose to use this method of punishment to eliminate.
* Why would you choose to use it?
* On what principles of learning do you base your opinion?
* What efforts would you have tried first prior to resorting to a punishment procedure?
* When punishing an inappropriate behavior, why is it also important to reinforce an appropriate behavior?
