Part II: Developing and Focusing the Research Design
Groups are encouraged to meet with the instructor prior to submitting this section.
Address the following elements in this section and not who completed each of them:

● Choose one program (from the list in Part I) as the focus of the evaluation. Create a clear
description of the program; consider including elements such as length of program, eligibility
criteria, where it is located, what activities are included and who has responsibility for
oversight and delivery of it. If there are multiple components to the program, identify the
portion that you will be evaluating.

● Create a Logic Model that identifies the inputs/resources, activities, outputs, outcomes and
impact for this program. Use Figure 3.2 in the text as your guide.

● From the Logic Model, choose one outcome to use as the measure to assess the success of
the program.

● Develop one SMART (see Chapter 7) program objective related to this outcome and identify
the type of objective (e.g., knowledge, affect, or behavior) that it is.

● State the objective as a clear research question.

● Utilizing the resources available through the library website and/or a brief literature/online
search, identify a scale/instrument that could be used to measure the outcome. Attach the
instrument if it is available; if not, describe the instrument. Include any information you find
about reliability and/or validity of the instrument.

● Identify other characteristics of participants that would also be important to collect as part of
the evaluation.

● Briefly explain the reason(s) that evaluating this program is important/needed.
