As a firefighter, you’ve donned and doffed your structural turnout gear countless times. The thickness and sheer weight of your gear give you a feeling of invincibility, but far from it. As I tell students constantly, turnouts are fire-resistant, not fireproof! You have to know your limitations, or you will pay the price. That price could range from severe burns to death.
In this week’s discussion. Please research and discuss how structural turnouts are rated and their limitations to types of fire conditions. Remember how fire spreads: Conduction, Convection, and Radiation.

During this week reading we will be talking about standpipes. As a firefighter working fires in elevated structures poses unique challenges. Everything you need to fight fire from breathing air to fire hose must be carried upstairs.
During this week’s discussion I want you to research what equipment you will need and justify why its needed. High rise equipment packs can vary. I want to know what is in your high rise cache. You’re crew (4-persons) is the first in company on an office fire on the 9th floor. Consider you will be fighting fire unsupported by additional resources for at least 45 minutes. There are standpipes in each floor, so at least your water supply is supplied.
