Write a two- to three-page, double-spaced paper that discusses the lyrics to a song with a law-related theme. Explain how the law is portrayed in the lyrics, making specific connections to concepts we’ve discussed in class. In addition to the two-page paper, include the lyrics to the song and a link to where the song can be streamed (legally and for free – YouTube is a great source!).
To get the full three extra credit points, papers must make a clear argument about the image of the law as portrayed in the song, be well-organized, and have minimal spelling and grammatical errors. You should not simply be saying, for example, “This song has to do with free speech.” Explain how the song connects to free speech, the First Amendment, particular court cases, etc. using specific lyrics. This is a deliberately broad and open-ended assignment…just make sure the song connects to the American legal system or criminal justice system, and do your best to connect it to concepts we’ve discussed in class.
Definitely have fun with this – students in the past have submitted a very wide range of songs across genres and decades. Feel free to be creative and think outside of the box, both with your song choice and your analysis. Profanity is acceptable.
