During this unit on the global cultural revolutions of the 1960s, we have read Son of the Revolution by Liang Heng and Judith Shapiro. For this assignment, you will write an approximately 600 word reflection paper, not including notes (about 2 full pages, double-spaced, font-size 12, Times New Roman with 1 inch margins all around). You must use – and display an understanding of – at least 5 of the chapters of the book, including chapters in the beginning, middle, and end of the book.
This assignment has three main parts.
- Explain Liang Heng’s experiences of the Cultural Revolution
- Explain the effects of the Cultural Revolution on other individuals described in the book
- Reflect on the type of literary genre Son of the Revolution is, how this genre effects our understanding of the Cultural Revolution, and how the book relates to your knowledge of the Cultural Revolution from class

Your grade will be determined as follows (100 points in total):
Part I
- Demonstrated understanding of Liang Heng’s experiences in the Chinese Cultural Revolution (20 points)
Part II
- Demonstrated understanding of how the Chinese Cultural Revolution effected individuals other than Liang Heng, described in the book (20 points)
Part III
- Demonstrated understanding of the literary genre Son of the Revolution is, and how it effects the reliability and usefulness of this source for understanding history (10 points overall)
- Demonstration of how the book informs your understanding of the Cultural Revolution in China, relating it to your knowledge of the Cultural Revolution learned in class. (10 points)
Writing and Support
- Your support for your argument, using specific references to at least 5 chapters, including chapters in the beginning, middle, and end of the book (20 points overall)
- The accuracy and effectiveness of your writing (10 points overall)
- Proper use of citations (10 points overall)
Furthermore, papers that are shorter in length or significantly off topic may lose additional points.
Historians generally use Chicago or Turabian formatting for their citations. However, if you are familiar with a different formatting style for notes, such as MLA or APA, you may use it, so long as you declare which style you are using at the top of the paper and use that format consistently.
