Policy: Then and Now

President Bill Clinton was elected U.S. president in 1992, and he was the first baby boomer elected to the presidency. He and Vice President Al Gore set out to engage in welfare reform, health care reform, economic recovery, and crime control. During the Clinton era, unemployment was low, inflation was low, and the economy flourished. With the George W. Bush election in 2000 and his presidency, terrorism and engagement in the War on Terror took on a central role. A serious recession had begun prior to Barak Obama’s election in 2008 and continued into his presidency. Meanwhile, the Obama administration worked to implement health care reform in the form of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) early in his term.

When charting the historical record, social workers ask more than what occurred. They also ask, “Why, and through what methods?”

For this Discussion, you will explore methods of helping the poor and how they have changed as a result of contemporary social welfare policies. You will also examine how methods for helping the poor have remained the same.

Post

  • Explain how methods to help the poor have changed in contemporary social welfare.
  • Explain how these methods have remained the same.
  • Choose at least one colleague who discussed methods to help the poor.
  • Describe how your colleague’s method to help the poor could benefit from a change or further benefit from additional change.

  • Critical Thinking: Reading Evidence
  • Have you ever read something and said, “I really like this” or “I do not like this?”You may want to ask yourself the following questions to understand why you liked or did not like the reading: Is the reason you liked the information because it fits your world view? Or, is the reason you did not like the information because it does not fit your world view? Challenging yourself to assess key points in an article is an essential step in critical thinking. In this Discussion, you read all three articles provided, and identify and explain the key points in the articles—specifically, you explore how these key points are important to social work research. To prepare: Review the three articles found in the Learning Resources.Post:
    • Identify the key points of the three articles.
    • Explain how the key points identified from the articles are important to research in social work.
    • Explain how the key points may help you become a better social worker.
    • Explain what impact not understanding the key points will have on you as a social worker.
    • Explain how your colleagues’ identified key points complement your own and may help you become a better social worker.
