Case Study #1
AN IDLE OR SERIOUS THREAT?
Rufus Hall is seeking help with his four-year marriage. According to Rufus, his wife, Sara, refuses to come to counseling with him and has been threatening to get a divorce. Rufus reports that on occasion he gets very angry with his wife and has slapped her once or twice. During one session, he said that he loves his wife and would kill her if she goes through with her threat to get a divorce. His social worker, Jillian Adams, who lives in the same community as Rufus and Sara, knows that Sara recently saw a lawyer about a divorce. To date, Rufus has only spoken of slaps, but Jillian is uncertain how to respond to his comment that he would kill Sara if she divorces him.
