1) Develop a list of 3 questions with which you will interview your subject about their life experiences in regards to race and ethnicity (in other words, when it comes to our class material).
2) Write a short paper in which you
- Write about comparing and contrasting your experiences and your subject’s experiences, referring back to specific questions that you asked. Avoid value judgements and stereotypes; you are simply reporting on what you heard and how your experiences have been different and similar; one person’s experiences are not better than another.
- In your description of the experiences of both your interview subject and yourself, you need to incorporate and define at least five class concepts (such as race, ethnicity, the social construction of race, prejudice, immigration, etc.)
- When you work those terms in, make sure to bold or underline them so that it is easier for me to find the terms. (And frankly, easier for you to make sure you’ve included them.)
- You also need to connect two of the class readings – they need to be from two different units, but you pick which readings – to your experiences or the experiences of the person you interviewed. For example, “My friend reported that people interact with them differently when they are with their family, much like our unit 1 reading, ‘With kids, I’m dad; alone, thug.’ “
- Also address the following:
- How did you think about your chosen concepts before the semester started (you could talk about definitions here, or simply how you felt about the concepts or what your experiences had been)?
- Have your feelings/definitions/etc. changed over the course of the semester?
- How does your conversation with your interview subject illustrate the changes (or lack of changes) in your thoughts about our class concepts?
- How does your conversation with your interview subject illustrate that race and ethnicity are socially constructed or defined concepts? What is one reading from the semester that illustrates this point? Here at the end of the semester, what do we mean by socially defined or constructed?
Your paper should be at least 750 words.
5) At the end of the paper, include a list of the questions that you asked. This does not count in your word count.
***Once assigned, I will provide you with the 3 interview questions to use, two class readings to connect in the paper, and the five concepts to define in the paper.
