SOC 101 Chapman University Socio Political Model in the USA Discussion

The final paper for our class will be three short answer responses to the prompts listed below. Please answer all three prompts to get full credit. Like Essay 1, you should have a thesis for each prompt that you will then prove. You may find that not all questions in the prompt are relevant to your thesis, which is okay. The objective is to see how well and concisely you can argue your point of view on the topics below :o). The short answer responses should be exactly one page in length per prompt. Do not exceed the one page but be sure to use 12pt. font, double-space, Times New Roman font with one inch side, top and bottom page margins. Once again, that means, each prompt gets one full page for a total of three full pages, double-spaced. For citations, you may use the endnotes feature so that you don’t have to take up valuable space with in-text citations. Citations should include all relevant information on the sources used including author name, year, title of the work, publisher, page numbers, and for online sources the URL and the date on which you accessed the page should be inluded. The end notes will fall onto page four but the bulk of the writing should remain on one whole page per prompt. You can find the endnotes feature under the footnotes tool bar in Word.

Prompts:

1. What kind of socio-political model does the United States really have? Is it what C. Wright Mills refers to as the power elite or is it a democray? A republic? A police state? Draft a thesis statement around this general topic and use evidence to back up your claim. Make sure you cite academic sources beyond the mainstream and alternative media.

2. What is the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (aka linguistic relativity hypothesis) and in what ways has it been proven/disproven?

3. Technological determinism assumes that changes in technology drive changes in society rather than the opposite. Craft a thesis backed with citations arguing for or against technological determinism. Be sure to include some real world examples in your argument.

Each prompt has to have a page response and please cite the sources on the endnotes for each prompt. You will need 2-3 sources per prompt.
