So the assignment is basically these 5 questions and they are found in the documents that i will post below.

Read “Masks of God” and the accompanying web links, and respond to the following questions. As you do so, be sure to make note of any patterns you see (both within the readings and between those readings and what you’ve read before), as well as anything you find confusing, contradictory or troubling. Try to be as specific as possible in your comments, making reference to the texts to support your interpretation.

  1. How do Christians and Muslims assert their common heritage with other Abrahamic religions, including the Jews? How do Christian and Muslim authors view the role of divine revelation in non-Abrahamic religions? Does this strike you as a pluralist approach to their shared religious heritage?
  2. We have seen that the Dalai Lama asserts that Buddhists do not believe in a single all-powerful creator god. How does the Buddha dismiss this idea in the Brahmajala Sutta? Is this an exclusivist position?
  3. What is upaya? How do Buddhists and Hindus alike use the doctrine of upaya to explain the relationship between different religious traditions? Is upaya always an inclusivist doctrine?
  4. In 2015, the evangelical Wheaton College has announced a settlement to the case of Dr. Larycia Hawkins – they will “part ways” under undisclosed terms. According to the Atlantic article and the statements by Wheaton College itself, what was the cause of the tension between Hawkins and Wheaton? Does this seem like a suitable resolution to the case? You may wish to read Wheaton’s “Statement of Faith” linked in the Atlantic article for greater clarity.
  5. In 2017, the Hawkins case again made national headlines, when Senator Bernie Sanders castigated Russell Vought’s defense of Wheaton’s position as Islamophobic. What were the reasons for this controversy? Do you think Senator Sanders acted appropriately?
