Your task is to head out to your local pharmacy and investigate OTC/ herbal products available to your patient.
Faculty will randomly assign the following symptoms to you.
Go find out as much as you can for what is available OTC. Use any resources you would like, but please list them.
What is at the local CVS/Walgreen’s/Other Pharmacy for this symptom? Use the product package itself, Up to date, any articles, the text book etc.
Describe the medication(s)
1.What does it do? How dose it work? Pharmacodynamic/ pharmacokinetics?
2. What are possible side effects? Adverse reactions? (Don’t go by the box- look it up)
3. Who should or should not take it? Adults, peds, pregnant, those with chronic diseases?
4. Are there any controversial issues with this medication being OTC?
5. As a primary care NP, who would you suggest use this to, describe the ideal patient. How would you provide patient education?
