For the final project, you will write a paper and give a presentation. Both will analyze a significant enterprise or investigative story and explain how various aspects of journalism and public service reporting are present. There is a list of five stories with links in online . Pick one of the stories to analyze in a tightly written paper of 700 to 1,000 words and in a PowerPoint that highlights the main points of your analysis. You will present your PowerPoint online during one of the final two classes of the semester. Both your paper in a Word document and the PowerPoint must be submitted throughonline. Due date is midnight April 25.

Your analyses should cover at least some of the concepts and answer some of the questions listed below.

  • Public service: How does this story serve the public interest? Does it protect a vulnerable population, expose wrongdoing, document a systemic problem or bring to light something that’s been hidden?
  • Sourcing on and off the record: Are the sources clear? Are they credible and/or trustworthy?
  • Public records, documents or data: How are they used? Do they advance the story?
  • Narrative: Does the story use narrative techniques and storytelling? To what effect?
  • Does the story reflect a high level of reporting? Can you see from the story how the journalists did their reporting? Is the story filled with facts?
  • Enterprise: Did the reporters come up with an enterprising story topic and are not simply reacting to or reporting on events? What question does this story answer?

You do not have to touch on all of these, but your paper should address those that are significantly represented in the story. The paper should mention which story you’re writing about. Your paper should be double-spaced and be 70 to no more than 1,000 words long and be written in Word. This paper should not be in inverted pyramid style but can be written as a more traditional term paper. But use Associated Press style. Spelling, punctuation and grammar count.

During the last week of classes, you will give a presentation during our Zoom meeting with a PowerPoint that summarizes your analysis. Your presentation should take 6-8 minutes including a minute for questions. You can click a Share Screen button so we can see your PowerPoint. You will be graded on the content of your PowerPoint, not its esthetics, and on the clarity of your presentation. I will post a schedule online for everyone to schedule a time to give their presentation on April 27 or 29.RUBTIC
