Skills Builder #2

Purpose:

Skills Builders apply concepts from the text and class discussion to your own communication experiences. These activities create awareness of your communication behaviors and those of others.

Description:

Answer the questions below in complete sentences and paragraphs. Use material from the text and lecture. Quote the textbook. The paper for the entire activity should total 1 ½ to 2 pages, typed, double-spaced.

Guidelines:

  1. Think of a time when someone misunderstood a word you used. How did what you meant compare to their interpretation of the word? How might you avoid causing similar confusion in the future? Key terms to focus on here would be equivocal words, relative words, slang, jargon, and euphemism.
  2. Describe any distracting mannerisms that you may have. Ask someone who knows you well to provide input. Compare your perceptions with theirs. How aware of your nonverbal communication behaviors are you? What, if any, changes would you like to make?
  3. Use material from the text and lecture. Quote the textbook.
  4. Your writing should be clear, coherent, and organized. The grammar should be accurate and there should be no mechanical errors. Any quotations should be cited using APA style.
