Writing
Part 1:
This activity is based on the provided readings from The Unlevel Playing Field: A Documentary History of the African American Experience in Sport.
Historians use primary documents as evidence to support their historical claims. You will be making claims and summarizing/analyzing sources in your paper. This is practice, and will be graded based on completion and effort.
Write one paragraph (6-12 sentences each) that:
a) makes a claim (an argument)
b) references TWO of these primary sources to support that claim.*
*I am considering Tommie Smith’s and Ralph Boston’s statements SEPARATE sources.
What I am essentially asking you to do is write a body paragraph that might show up in a longer essay about some component of the African American sporting experience or civil rights. The claim should come in the form of a topic sentence. You can quote or paraphrase the sources and you can cite them with the speaker’s/author’s name in parentheses.
Hint: The first two sources (from Chet Walker and Doc Young) in the packet are both about college sports. It is likely that a claim utilizing these two sources would, therefore, be about that setting. The second two sources (from Smith and Boston) are both about the Olympics and protest. These would be obvious and useful groupings, though if you would like to explore a different theme that you see connecting various sources, that’s fine too.
An example in this module (see attached file)
Part 2: (check the final paper guideline, then write a research proposal), word count at least 200-250.
Please submit a short research proposal that addresses the following (probably one or two sentences per question):
1. if you want to read a book, which, and have you asked me for approval if it’s not on the suggested list?
2. Approximate your paper’s argument (which course topics will your paper likely address? What do you expect to glean from your research on this topic? Aim for as much specificity as possible, but you haven’t done the research yet, so don’t worry about presenting a genius idea here!)
3. What outside sources do you plan to utilize to support your argument?
You are not required to ultimately write the paper that you propose in this assignment.
