Paper 3: Researched Argument

WRITING ASSIGNMENT: (1300-2000 words)

In this your final paper you will need to conduct academic research and build on the argument
constructed in the Argument Synthesis paper to create your own argument based on new
information collected and analyzed. A minimum of 6 sources must be used.

CONTEXT:

For this essay, you will create your own original argument (your thesis statement) that you will
then use your sources/research to prove as true. This is a basic argumentative essay that should
be written following the Toulmin Method of Argumentation. This essay can build on the
Argument Synthesis, but it must show clear revision based on all previous feedback, include an
original argument for the thesis statement, as well as to add in additional sources for support/
evidence, a counterargument, and a rebuttal.

  • THIS ESSAY MUST INCLUDE:

  • Introduction:
    • Background information on the topic
    • Briefly introduce the sources and how they discuss the topic• A thesis statement as the last sentence of the introduction
  • Body Paragraphs:
    • All body paragraphs need to be written following the Toulmin Method of Argumentation
      (see the Week 4 video and transcript posted under the “Videos” link on the sidebar in
      Blackboard
      • Each paragraph needs to include:

      • A topic sentence/good reason (the main idea of the paragraph given as the first
        sentence/reasons that the thesis statement is true)
      • Support (direct quotes and other evidence from the sources)
      • Warrant (the analysis that connects how/why this idea supports the thesis statement
        as true)
    • Each body paragraph must clearly support the thesis statement
    • There must be two direct quotes, each from a different source, in each body paragraph
    • All direct quotes must be less than two lines
    • All direct quotes must include MLA in-text citations
      • Counterargument
    • The counterargument must be fairly addressed and have 1-2 credible sources referenced for
      evidence and support.
    • The counterargument must be clearly explained in at least one full paragraph
      • Rebuttal
      • The rebuttal to the counterargument must be fairly written, with at least 1-2 new credible
      sources referenced for evidence and support.
      • Conclusion:
      • Must wrap up the essay without presenting any new information
      • All formatting including citations and Works Cited page need to be in MLA format.
  • No personal references! The essay must remain in the 3rd person to maintain a formal andacademic tone.
