Hi there,
The essay question is ” should gender be a key variable in the study of brain and behaviour?”, this essay should based on neuro science (sex difference in genetics, hormones, brain structure and function). There will be about 25 references which you can use to start with, it is a MSc essay, so please be aware with vocabulary use, arguments, and sources (no wiki, no non peer reviewed online page).
Further clarification of essay question:
‘Gender” and ‘sex’ have in the past been conflated, usually as ‘sex’ specific ways; ‘sex’ would refer to biological/ genetic/ anatomical characteristics, ‘gender’ refers to a social/ cultural label which may or may not match biological sex. The key issue behind the essay question is: does ‘classical’ work justify the notion that there are clear differences in brain and behaviour between males and females. or do contemporary research and ideas support the conclusion that most of the established ideas are illusory and that differences between males and females in most areas are insignificant. The issue of biological sex versus gender identity is not yet central to this area, but what are the potential implications of changing views on gender and of our awareness that research results are influenced by e.g. gender stereotypes and social expectations?
Where to start with:
Classic research into gender differences in brain and behaviour ; interaction of genes and testosterone; sex difference in brain structure (white matter, grey matter); sex differences in verbal and visuospatial behaviours- do they exit? Sex difference in social behaviour (aggression) and psychopathology; the mosaic brain; problems in disentangling environment and genetics.
(Please note that this essay should not be focused on gender stereotypes and expectations, however a general aspect of how the society contract the stereotypes in gender would be helpful. )
The essay should be:
1. 2500 words (not including reference)
2. APA referencing
3. At least 25 references
4.Using reliable sources
5. Good argument
